1Up Productions
Successfully translating a beloved video game into a great film or TV series is a real challenge all by itself. Making it a creative, financial, and strategic triumph for the creators and owners of these rich imaginary worlds is a daunting task that no one should have to figure out on their own.
Throughout my career as an entertainment industry attorney and executive, I’ve experienced the traditional entertainment/video game industry divide from both sides many times. But it’s my work at Riot Games — where I helped launch the company’s new in-house film and television studio (and, along the way, won an Emmy as an executive producer of the second season of the company’s celebrated hit Arcane on Netflix) — that gives me a one-of-a-kind perspective on what it means, what it takes, and why it’s so hard to make a video game adaptation a true success — creatively, financially, and strategically.
That’s why, alongside this Substack and The Business of Television Prime, I’m also launching 1Up Productions, a one-of-a-kind strategic, creative, business, and legal advisory service designed to help video game publishers define and achieve their goals in the promising and perilous world of film and television — because I hate bad video game adaptations (and seeing potentially great ones go to waste) as much as you do, and I want to be on your side to help make sure yours doesn’t suffer either of those fates.
